Pomoc Boží Iron Ore Mine

The Pomoc Boží (Hilfe Gottes) Iron Ore Mine was the largest iron ore mine in the surroundings of Horní Blatná. It operated from the 16th century to the end of the 19th century and also for a short period during World War I. The iron occurred in the form of hematite, which created accumulations in the quartz fillings of the Bludná vein structure.

Hematite formed frequently beautiful hemispherical formations of up to 0.5 metres. Since the late 19th century, this so-called kidney ore has been collected and the best pieces supplied to stone cutters and traders of natural products. Hematite samples from Horní Blatná are the showpieces of many museum collections. To a lesser extent, hematite was used for the production of red pigment. The economy of mining was improved by the local extraction of manganese ore.
