Sokolov – Sea Medard

A sea of sports and relaxation

Medard Lake was created on the site of the Medard-Libík coal mine between Svatava, Habartov and Bukovany. The flooding of the mine lasted from 2008 to 2016. The length of the created water area is 4 km, width 1.5 km and depth in places reaches up to 50 meters. With an area of over 493 hectares, it is the largest artificial lake and the 16th largest water area in the Czech Republic. The entire devastated mining area is undergoing a transformation, which has extraordinary sports and recreational potential.

Planned facilities include swimming pools and beaches, a boating camp, a campsite with log cabins, a diving base and a sports yachting base, football, softball and golf courses, an equestrian base, a rope sports area, a bicross, online and motocross area, a hotel complex, a university campus, an airport for ultralight aircraft and an amusement park. We will see what of these ambitious plans will be realized. The place is currently mainly used by cyclists, hikers and sport fishermen. Entry and swimming are at your own risk.

Medard Lake is an important site of the cross-border Czech-Bavarian Geopark. The main topics at this stop of the GEO Trail are coal mining and the reclamation of the landscape affected by mining.
