Old roads in Carlsbad Vary spa forests

The Old Prague Road

The Old Prague road was built 1804-1811 as a “New Path” ("Neue Kunstrasse") or "Chaucée". In his time was considered as a real engineering marvel. Construction initiated by Emperor Franz I. was realised at state expense. Price amounted to 160,000 guilders. Great merit in the construction of new roads holds Austrian finance minister and Government President in the Kingdom of Bohemia Johann Rudolf, Count Chotek. Remnants of the abandoned oldest Prague road can be found at the slope above the present road.

The bedrock in the area between the crossroads “U Koníčka” and the saddle “Na Hůrkách” is built by two granite varieties the Karlovy Vary Pluton. Its contact occurs about 200 m from the said crossroads. Towards the north, the bedrock consists of fine to medium grained, sometimes porphyric granite (type “Three Crosses”), towards the south occurs the coarse-grained granite of the older intrusive complex (so-called “gebirgsgranite”).

Limitations on number of partial slopes in the cuts artificially established road indicates the presence of fault zones of several directions, frequently manifested by developing significant erosion furrows. Granite bedrock is found relatively shallow beneath the surface. The highest thickness of quaternary layers is about 2.70 m. The quaternary cover consists of loamy gravel, debris and sandy loams. In many places was by the terrain modifications during the road construction removed.

Views from the road towards the Hill of Imperial and southern outskirts of the spa town are believed for more than 200 years. In 1812 there also met J. W. Goethe and L. v. Beethoven. Today, the road was declared to a technical monument.
