On the southern outskirts of the spa town of Karlovy Vary, on both sides of the Teplá River, the springs of colder strongly gaseous mineral water Dorotka (Dorothy) and Štepánka (Stephanie) are situated. The Spring of Dorothy is accompanied by flows of dry carbon dioxide. Behind the Art Gallery, the road goes upward into the spa forests in places, where formerly stood cruise cafe "Sanssouci" and also a summer amphitheatre. Above the parking at the gallery are interesting outcrops of coarse grained granite of the "Jelení skok " type, which forms the bedrock all the way to the Findlater Temple and the chapel of Ecce Homo. Coarse-grained granite contains fine-grained apophyses. The Findlater Temple is a remarkable semicircular wooden building founded by James Ogilvy, 7th Earl of Findlater, Scottish nobleman, who is credited with the development of Carlsbad at the turn of the 18th and 19 century. The road passes west of the Jižní (“South”) Hill, on the top of which was built the neo-Gothic Observation tower of Charles IV.
The Jižní Hill creates a barrier that wraps the Teplá River from the east. The development of the Teplá waterway, especially in the section from the Březová Dam to the southern edge of the spa town of Karlovy Vary, documents the existence of radical movements of the young Quaternary age. The original north-south direction of the Teplá flow, documented by the young Pleistocene sediments, through the saddle between elevations of “Vysoký hřeben” and Doubská hora, was apparently changed by the effects of landslide in this space. The Teplá River initially flowed to Ohře (Eger) in the area of Doubí. Then the river used of the older beds of the Creeks Lomnický and Cínový and broke the original watershed. Changed flow conditions at the end of the Riss Ice Age (at the time of the onset of interglacial R / W) gave a deeper opening of the Karlovy Vary thermal structure. Gaseous thermal water protruded to the surface in places closer to the present bottom of the valley, where also intensive hot-spring sedimentation occurred.
